Fog sits on the water here for days together and the whole quarter goes quiet underneath it. Chloe, blonde and twenty-four, reads that as the right condition for slow work: no daylight worth the name, no reason to be anywhere, oil kept hot on the radiator between passes. She has French and English and moves between them as a room prefers. Ninety minutes suits her better than sixty and she will tell you why rather than simply asserting it. Whatever the hour holds is hers to set, and she sets it in the first few minutes.
