Amsterdam body to body massage in autumn, when the wind comes off the IJ

Storm season arrives here in October and does not really leave until March. Wind off the open water, an evening that was going to be spent outside and now will not be, and a booking that fits the change of plan.

The wind is the part nobody packs for

Visitors prepare for rain and for cold and arrive unprepared for the wind, which is the condition that actually governs an Amsterdam autumn. It comes off open water to the north and east with nothing much in the way, and in the exposed stretches along the water it takes an evening apart in about ten minutes. Umbrellas do not survive it. Bicycles become work rather than transport. Terrace heaters get switched off and the covers come out. The practical effect on a visitor is that outdoor plans made at lunchtime are quietly abandoned by seven, and the evening becomes a question of what to do indoors instead.

Old windows, and what the wind finds in them

Wind matters indoors here in a way it does not in newer cities, because the central housing stock is old and the windows in it are frequently original. A single glazed sash in a gale does not simply feel cold, it moves air through a room continuously, and a room with air moving through it cannot be warmed by turning the radiator up. The fixes are ordinary. Draw heavy curtains and let them fall to the sill rather than tucking them behind a radiator. Close the internal doors. Deal with the gap under the door if there is one, since that is where the draught completes its circuit. Do all of it when the booking is confirmed rather than at the last moment.

Why this is the season the format was chosen for

Everything on this site is organised around one idea, which is that warmth and shelter are what a visitor here actually wants for eight months of the year, and full contact oil work is the form of massage that delivers both without asking the building for anything. No gel to warm, no layer to lay out, no dependence on a bathroom at the top of four flights of stairs. On a night when the window frame is audible, a format that carries its own warmth is not a preference, it is the difference between an hour that works and an hour spent slightly braced. The format page explains how the hour is built.

Storm season is when the long bookings get written

There is a pattern to the calendar here and autumn is where it turns. Through the summer most bookings are an hour or ninety minutes, placed late and often decided the same day. From the middle of October the length goes up: two hours and three become ordinary rather than occasional, and the eight hour block for a single guest starts appearing on weekends. The reason is not complicated. An evening that begins at five and has nothing in it is a different quantity of time from an evening that begins at nine, and people book against the time they actually have.

Arrival in a gale

The window holds at forty to sixty minutes anywhere in the centre, and autumn weather does not extend it. What the wind does do is make the arrival itself less pleasant, so the same small courtesies that matter on a wet night matter here: somewhere for a coat, a few minutes before anything begins, and the heating already on rather than just switched on. If the street door locks in the evening, or the building wants visitors met at reception, that belongs in the first message. Schiphol and the airport hotels are arranged separately from the centre, with the journey agreed with you before an hour is held.

Which formats want a calm evening instead

Tantra is the one most affected by a room that cannot settle, because breath work needs a body that is not braced and a gale through a sash window keeps it braced. It is a fine autumn booking in a modern room with good glazing and a poor one in a draughty attic, and that is a statement about the room rather than about the format. Nuru and soapy are both fine here provided the bathroom is warm, which in an old building in November is worth checking rather than assuming. If the room is the variable, the oil formats remove it entirely. The formats page reads them all against the weather.

Two therapists, and space in an old room

Four hands, billed at twice the single hour, brings warmth up quickly, which is a real advantage in this season, and it needs floor space on both long sides of the bed to do it. Central Amsterdam rooms are frequently narrow, with the bed against one wall and a metre of standing room on the other, and in a room like that two therapists cannot work as intended. It is worth measuring with your eyes before asking. Where the room does allow it, an hour with two is a denser hour rather than a longer one, and every booking with two therapists is confirmed with half the fee before anyone sets out.

A storm that actually stops the city

Occasionally the weather here does more than make an evening unpleasant. Trains stop, the airport reschedules, and the city issues instructions about being outdoors. If a booking cannot happen for a reason genuinely outside either side's control, nothing is forfeited and nothing is argued over: the deposit becomes credit held against a date you do not have to choose immediately. An ordinary storm is not that. Wind that puts you off going out is precisely the situation this page exists for, and a change of mind on the night is read on the notice scale like any other. The booking page sets the scale out in figures.

Writing it while the window frame is rattling

Where you are, the hour in Amsterdam time, how long, one therapist or two, and a line about the room and its windows. Everyone in the room is twenty-one or over and a photograph document may be asked for at the door. Your therapist decides what a session includes and says where her limits are at the start of the visit, and they hold until she leaves. If a name has already settled it, write it and the reply says whether she is free. The roster is the place to look, and the questions page answers most of the rest.
