Nuru massage in Amsterdam, and the room it needs behind it

Nuru replaces oil with a thick, near odourless gel that holds water and makes contact slide rather than glide. It is a fine booking here and it is an honest thing to say that it asks more of a building than anything else on this list. The gel has to be brought up to temperature or it is unpleasant on skin, a surface has to be laid out so the bed survives, and hot water has to be available afterwards for both of you. In a mild month none of that is a problem. In the third week of January, in a canal house room with a small bathroom on an outside wall, each of those three things can go wrong on its own. Booked with that in mind, with ninety minutes rather than sixty, it is full contact work taken about as far as it goes. Booked without thinking about it, it becomes a session about plumbing.

Where it comes from

The technique came out of Japan, where the gel is made from a seaweed extract and the format grew up around rooms built for it, with drainage, heating and a surface designed to be hosed down. What travelled to Europe was the gel and the idea rather than the room, so every operator outside Japan has had to solve the same problem: how to run a format designed for a wet room inside an ordinary bedroom. The portable answer is a waterproof layer, warmed gel and a shower at both ends, and it works, provided the building cooperates.

How the hour is worked

The gel is warmed and applied in quantity, and from there almost nothing is done with the hands in the ordinary sense. She uses her whole length, moving along rather than across, with her weight distributed so that no single point takes it. Because the gel removes friction, direction changes are slow and the session has no sharp edges in it anywhere. In a cool room she keeps a towel over whichever part of you is not currently being worked on, which is a small thing that makes a large difference in February. Everything is rinsed at the end with plain water.

What an hour holds

She arrives with the gel and a waterproof layer and spends a few minutes setting up, which is time inside the booking and the reason ninety minutes suits it better than an hour. The gel is warmed before anything starts. Most sessions begin with a shower, and in the cold months that shower is doing double duty by getting your skin temperature up before contact begins. The work itself is continuous and slower than oil work, since the gel carries weight differently and nothing is gripped. She sets out her limits at the start of the visit in her own words and they stand for the whole of it. Afterwards the gel rinses off with water and no soap, which takes a few minutes, and she takes her own layer away with her.

Who sends for it

Guests in a room with reliable heating and a bathroom they have actually looked at. Anyone who wants the full contact idea taken to its furthest point. People staying in the warmer half of the year, when none of the setup is a fight. It suits a heatwave less well than soapy does, and it suits a cold top floor room with a temperamental shower least of all, in which case body to body gives you most of the same thing with none of the logistics.

What you are left with

Unbroken contact over a large surface, with a slide that oil cannot reproduce and a feeling of weightlessness that comes from the gel rather than from technique. For a guest who has spent the day pushing a bicycle through wind, the absence of any pressure point at all is the part that registers.

At your address

Nuru massage brought to hotel rooms and apartments in central Amsterdam, gel warmed on arrival, a waterproof layer laid out and a rinse at the end, outcall.

Length

Ninety minutes is the honest minimum, and it is not a sales line. Between the shower, the setup and the rinse, a single hour leaves a short session inside it. Two hours gives the middle stretch the room it deserves. Booked into a hot week it needs no extra time at all, which is one of the few things the weather makes easier here.

Questions

Asked often, answered once

Is nuru a bad idea in an Amsterdam winter?

Not a bad idea, a demanding one. The gel is warmed before it goes anywhere near skin, so the gel itself is not the issue. The room is. If the heating is slow, the bathroom is on an outside wall or the hot water has already disappointed you once, either take ninety minutes so nothing is rushed, or take body to body instead and keep the evening simple.

What does the room actually need?

Somewhere to lay a waterproof layer, which in practice means a bed with space to walk around one side of it, and a shower that works for both of you before and after. Nothing else. She brings the gel, the layer and the towels, and she takes all three away again. If you are unsure about the bathroom, write a line about it in the thread and the answer will be plain.

How long does the setup and the rinse take out of the booking?

Between ten and fifteen minutes across the whole booking, which is why ninety minutes is the length suggested here rather than a bare sixty. Inside an hour the session is real but short. Inside ninety minutes nothing is hurried, and inside two hours the middle stretch is long enough that the setup stops registering at all.
