A Note on Towels, and Why Four Is the Number

Of everything a guest can get ready before an evening, towels are the item underestimated more often than any other and the quickest to fix. Two is the working minimum. Four is comfortable. Hotel rooms in this city routinely supply fewer and smaller than the beds they serve.

The arithmetic

One goes under, across the middle of the bed, and it does the majority of the work. One is for afterwards. The third and fourth exist because towels here are often closer to hand towel size than bath sheet size, and because in either extreme of the year they have a second job.

In winter that job is heat. A towel that has been over a hot radiator holds warmth against skin in a way the air in the room cannot, and using one between stretches changes how a cold evening feels more than another degree on the thermostat would.

In summer the job is moisture. Skin stays damp in humid air, evaporation slows, and a dry towel is doing the work that cooling would otherwise do. Four is not luxury in a hot week; it is the difference between comfortable and sticky.

Ask in the afternoon

This is the whole practical point of the entry. Housekeeping in most buildings here works daytime hours, and the trolley has gone by early evening. A request at three in the afternoon produces four towels without discussion. The same request at nine at night produces an apology and, sometimes, two.

It is also the moment to ask about a second heater in the cold months, or a fan in a hot week, for exactly the same reason.

The bed, and what it needs

A bed works and no equipment is required. A firm mattress works better than a soft one, and a towel across the middle settles the question of the duvet before it becomes a question. Nothing has to be laid out in advance, nothing has to be waterproofed, and no part of the format depends on the bathroom.

That last point is the reason this format suits a room you checked into three hours ago and have not inspected. Formats that do lean on the plumbing are good bookings where the plumbing is known and reliable, and in a small tiled bathroom on an external wall in February they are a different proposition.

What she brings

Oil, warm. Everything else about the room is the room's, which is why the short preparation list exists at all. It has four items and none of them takes more than a minute: warmth, towels, somewhere for a coat, and water within reach.

Water, since it is on the list

A heated room in winter is dry, and an hour of oil work in it is drier still. In a hot week the same applies for the obvious reason. A bottle within reach is a small thing that gets noticed at exactly the moment it is missing, and the tap water in this city is cold and costs nothing, which is the easiest place to fill one from.

The wider pattern

None of the preparation list is about ceremony. Each item removes a small friction from the first or last few minutes, and those minutes are where an otherwise good evening gets slightly diminished. The house arranges the hour, agrees it in writing and confirms it. The room is yours, and four towels is most of what it needs.

What to do if the room simply has two

It happens, usually in an apartment rather than a hotel, and there is no need to treat it as a problem. Two is workable. One goes across the middle of the bed and one is kept aside for afterwards, and the session runs perfectly well.

What changes is the margin. With two towels there is nothing spare for the floor, nothing spare to warm on a radiator in winter, and nothing spare when one gets used earlier than planned. A spare bath sheet from a cupboard, a folded blanket or even a clean sheet covers the gap adequately. The point of four is that none of these small decisions has to be made while somebody is standing in the room waiting for them.
